On April 2, it was reported that French game publisher Ubisoft announced that it will lay off another 45 people as part of its ongoing “streamlining operations” plan.
Back in November last year, Ubisoft announced the layoff of 124 positions, mainly in Canada. Now, the company has confirmed that 45 people will be laid off in the global distribution and Asia-Pacific regions.
In a statement to GameSpot, Ubisoft said, “Over the past few months, all teams at Ubisoft have been working hard to find ways to streamline operations and increase overall efficiency in order to achieve better results in the long term. Based on this, we are announcing today a further restructuring of the global distribution center and the Asia-Pacific region’s architecture to adapt to market changes in a more effective and agile way. These changes will affect a total of 45 positions. This is not a decision made lightly, and we will provide comprehensive support to our colleagues affected. We also greatly appreciate their contributions to the company.”
The gaming industry continues to face large-scale layoffs, and there seems to be no sign of relief in the short term. It is estimated that about 10,500 employees in the gaming industry were laid off last year. As of March 2024, around 8,000 planned layoff messages have been confirmed.
